Thimphu β’ Phobjikha β’ Punakha β’ Paro
Combining iconic cultural sites, meaningful local encounters, Himalayan landscapes and time to simply enjoy being here. From the cultural heart of Thimphu to the peaceful high-valley landscapes of Phobjikha, the historic warmth of Punakha, and the drama of Paro, this journey offers an unhurried, memorable first taste of Bhutan.
Arrive at Paro International Airport and begin your journey at a relaxed pace. Travel to the capital, Thimphu, and take time to acclimatise to Bhutan's altitude, fresh mountain air, and unhurried atmosphere. This first day is intentionally gentle, giving you time to settle into your surroundings without rushing.
Spend the day exploring Thimphu and experiencing different aspects of Bhutanese culture, spirituality, and everyday life. Depending on opening days and your interests, experiences include Buddha Dordenma colossus overlooking the valley, the National Takin Preserve, the Nunnery, the Buddhist Astrology School, the Centenary Farmers' Market, and local handicraft workshops.
Travel towards the peaceful Phobjikha Valley, surrounded by forests and dramatic mountain slopes. Enjoy a trail hike across the valley floor. From November to February, there is the special opportunity to witness the valley's endangered Black-necked Cranes. In the evening, witness prayer chants at the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery.
Descend into the warmer Punakha Valley, the ancient winter capital of Bhutan. Tour Punakha Dzong, the fortress situated between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Cross the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, and embark on a picturesque cultural hike through rice fields to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten.
Travel from Punakha to Paro via Dochula Pass (3,100m). Weather permitting, admire panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan mountain peaks. Stop for tea and local snacks along the route. Arrive in Paro and spend the afternoon relaxing to prepare for the following day's mountain hike.
Hike to Taktsang Monastery, dramatically perched on a sheer granite cliff 900 metres above the Paro Valley. The hike involves sustained uphill walking, uneven rocky terrain, and sacred stone steps. Allow approximately 5β6 hours for the complete round-trip excursion at an unhurried, respectful pace.
For travellers seeking a more demanding wilderness experience. Bumdra is an overnight high-altitude trek reaching 3,900β4,000m with a tented camp stay at ~3,800m. Day 1 involves 10β12 km (~1,000m ascent), and Day 2 descends 12β14 km past Tiger's Nest into Paro Valley. Requires prior itinerary adjustment and good fitness.
Your Bhutan journey comes to an end. Transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight, carrying lifetime memories of the kingdom's people, mountains, and sacred valleys. Tashi Delek!
